WordPress is a great platform but that doesn't mean everyone needs it. If you need a larger website, more functionality or the flexibility to add things as your business grows, WordPress can be a very good choice. I build and improve WordPress websites for small businesses and organisations, and I'll help you work out whether WordPress is actually the right fit for what you're trying to do.
WordPress is useful when your website needs to do more than simply provide information.
It can be a good fit if you need:
A larger website with lots of pages
A blog or regularly updated content
An online shop
Booking or appointment functionality
Membership or customer areas
Integrations with other services
More control over how your website works
Functionality that a simpler platform can't provide
A website that you expect to develop over time
It gives you plenty of flexibility, which can be a real advantage when you need it.
This is worth saying because WordPress isn't automatically the best choice.
If you need a small website with a few pages, your services, some photographs, contact details and a way for local customers to find you, you might not need all that flexibility.
A simpler platform could do the job just as well.
It could also be cheaper and easier to manage.
That's why I don't start with the question "How do I build this in WordPress?"
I start with:
"What are you actually trying to achieve?"
If Google Sites or another simpler solution would do the job, I'll tell you.
One of the reasons WordPress is so widely used is that it can be adapted to suit all sorts of businesses and projects.
Depending on what you need, your website could include:
Create and manage pages, blog posts, news and other content through the WordPress dashboard.
Sell products or services online and manage orders and customers.
Connect your website to booking and appointment systems.
Create anything from a simple contact form to more involved enquiry or application forms.
Connect your website to other services and software where appropriate.
Build your website with search engines in mind and give yourself plenty of control over your content and technical setup.
Not every website needs all of these things. Start with what you need today and add functionality as your business develops.
I'll help you work out which ones are actually useful to you.
I don't start with a WordPress theme and try to squeeze your business into it.
We'll start by understanding what your business does, who your customers are and what the website needs to achieve.
From there, I'll work out the structure, content and functionality that make sense.
That might mean a relatively straightforward WordPress website.
It might mean something more bespoke.
The platform should fit the website — not the other way around.
You don't necessarily need to start again.
If you've already got a WordPress website, I can help you improve it.
That could mean:
Updating the design
Improving mobile usability
Making the site easier to navigate
Improving page speed and performance
Fixing problems
Updating or replacing plugins
Improving your content
Making SEO improvements
Adding new functionality
Moving or restructuring your website
Giving you advice about what needs changing
Sometimes a website needs a complete rebuild.
Sometimes it just needs a bit of attention.
I'll tell you which I think it is.

WordPress gives you a lot of control, but that flexibility comes with a little more responsibility.
Unlike Google Sites, a WordPress website normally needs separate hosting and regular maintenance.
That can include things such as:
WordPress updates
Plugin updates
Backups
Security monitoring
Performance checks
Keeping things compatible as software changes
You can manage these things yourself if you're comfortable doing so.
Or I can take care of them for you.
You don't have to become a website administrator just because you own a WordPress website.
I don't treat SEO as something to bolt onto your website afterwards. I'll consider things like your site structure, headings, content, page titles and descriptions as part of the website build. That gives search engines a clear understanding of what your business does and gives your visitors useful, relevant information.
If you want to go further, I can also help with local SEO. There are plenty of things beyond the website itself that can help people find your business.
There's no single price because WordPress websites can be very different. A straightforward business website costs less than an ecommerce site with integrations and custom functionality.
I'll talk through what you need, recommend an approach and give you a clear idea of the cost before any work starts. You won't be encouraged to add features simply to increase the price. If you don't need something, I'll tell you.
WordPress is software. The useful bit is knowing how to use it to solve your particular problem.
I've been working with technology for more than 30 years, across large organisations, public-sector projects, international companies and small businesses. That experience means I'm comfortable dealing with the technical side when things get complicated — but I'll still explain it to you in plain English.
And because you'll deal directly with me, you won't be passed between salespeople, project managers and developers.
Professional experience. Practical advice. No unnecessary complexity.
Every website I build is different because every business is different.
Have a look at some of my previous work to see how I've approached different projects.
That's probably the most sensible question to ask.
Tell me what you're trying to achieve and I'll help you work out whether WordPress is the right solution.
It might be. It might not. Either way, I'll give you an honest recommendation based on what you actually need.
No hard sell. No obligation. Just straightforward advice.
